West of the Tagliamento and close to the Prealpi Carniche (Carnic Prealps), the nondescript village of Forgaria is known for the unforgettable Riserva Naturale Regionale del Lago di Cornino (%0427 80 85 26; www.riservacornino.it; Via Sancornino 81; by donation; hvaries seasonally), a nature reserve sprawling more than 500 hectares around a pristine lake with dazzling emerald waters.

Here, an international project to protect the griffon vulture has been underway for more than 20 years, so look up to spot dozens of them hurtling through the sky. From the visitor centre, follow the trail past the large aviaries where tawny owls, griffon vultures and a handsome eagle-owl are kept, until you reach a viewing terrace overlooking the vulture rookery.

From the village, a series of simple, well-marked hiking trails lead around the lake and up Monte Prat (841 m), which offers an impressive view of the Tagliamento River.

One of these trails, the sentiero Sompcornino-Ledrania-Peonis is a bit more demanding: around 5km long and with an elevation gain of 450m, it will take about 2.5 hours to complete.

Keep an eye out for vipers, but don’t forget to look up to catch impressive griffin vultures, as well as buzzards, kites and peregrine falcons.
